ABSTRACT
Morphology and reproductive structure of Plenosporium pusillum Yamada and P. caribaeum (Borgesen) Norris were investigated with field and laboratory cultured matcrials. P. caribaeum was collected for the first time in Korea. The diagnositc characters of these species agreed well with the original descriptions, except that the Korean plants produced polysporangina in P. caribaeum in contrast to tetrasporangia at type locality. The development of procarpic and cystocaripic structures was also identical in both and other sepecies of Plenosporium. The genus Pleonosporium is unique among genera of the Cornpsothamnieae. Pleonosporium has two pericentral cells in female fertiel axis but the other genea of Compsothamnieae have three pericentral cells. As the genus Pleonosporium proximates more to Griffithsieae than the genera of Compsothamnieae by their similarity of procarpic and cystocarpic structures. This genus is retained in the Pleonosporieae proposed by Feldmann-Mazoyer thanin Compsothamnieae currently included.
Key words: Pleonosporium, taxonomy, Pleonosporieae, Compsothamnieae
