ABSTRACT |
A new species spatoglossum latum is described on the materials from the Pacific coast of central Japan. It is closely related with S. crassum J. Tanaka which simultaneously occurs at their type locality, Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka Pref. These two species share the following reproductive characteristics; 1) sporangia and antheridia lying completely within the cortex, 2) oogonia partly extending into the medulla, but also protruding above the general thallus level. S. latum can be distinguished from S. crassum by the vegetative characteristics as follows: 1) a broader and thinner blade and 2) a presence of hair tufts.
