ABSTRACT |
A report of results of monoline culture of Gacilaria fisheri in pond, two experiments were conducted using nylon ropes of 10 meter length seeded with algal fragments. Each seeded rope of the first experiment had an average weight of 0.400-0.500 kg and 0.560-0.580 kg for the second experiment. The ropes were placed in a culture pond exposed to tidal changes, and drainage from upstream shrimp ponds. Biweekly weighing of the ropes and calculation of specific growth rates showed most effective increase up to 4-6 weeks. At the end of 8 weeks further cultivation of incompletely harvested ropes maintaining weights of 0.607 and 0.907 kg respectively showed lower specific growth rates compared to freshly seeded ones but had the advantage of less manpower and time investment.
