Growth of Phaeophyte (Fucus serratus) in Culture and Changes of the Amounts of Triacylglycerols and Fatty Acids

ABSTRACT |
Fucus serratus was cultivated for 13 weeks and analyzed to its triacylglycerols and fatty acids. After a month of culture, the thalli were grown into 0.1 cm per week. This period was corresponded with the lag phase on growth curve. The exponential phase occurred between 4th and 10th week of culture as the growth of thalli of 0.4 cm and 2.1 cm per week. The averages of amount of total lipids (TL) and triacylglycerols (TAG) in F. serratus were 8.4 mg·g super(-1) dry wt(0.8% of dry wt) and 1.9 mg·g super(-1) dry wt(0.2%), respectively. For the duration of culture, the amounts of TL and TAG tend to decrease from 16.3 to 4.3 mg·g super(-1) dry wt for TL and from 2.9 to 1.1 mg·g super(-1) dry wt for TAG. However, the dry weight of thalli was increased in culture (130 -> 241 mg·g super(-1) fresh wt super(-1)). In TL and TAG, C18:1 (oleic acid) was globally more abundant than C16:0 (palmitic acid) in culture. In TL, the amount of C16:0, C18:1 and C20:4 (arachidonic acid) were major. In TAG, the dominant fatty acids were C16:0, C18:1 and C18:2.
