ABSTRACT
UV-absorbing compounds were investigated in Korean macrophytes using absorbance and fourth-derivative spectra. Pterocladia capillacea and Hizikia fusiformis each revealed a single absorbance maximum at 334 nm while Ulva pertusa did not show any UV-absorbing compound absorbance maximum. Fourth-derivatives of P. capillacea and H. fusiformis revealed two predominant UV-absorbing maxima at 325 nm and three absorbance maxima at 325, 338.5 and 356 nm. The ratios of absorbance maxima UV-absorbing compound to Chl. a were 1.28 for P. capillacea and 4.51 for H. fusiformis, respectively.
Key words: absorbance spectra, Hizikia fusiformis, mycosporine amino acids, Pterocladia capillacea, Ulva pertusa, UV-absorbing compounds
