ABSTRACT |
The marine picophytoplankton, Pycnococcus provasolii Guillard was isolated from the western channel of the Korea Strait and its photosynthetic efficiency was investigated under various environmental conditions using Plant Efficiency Analyzer. Environmental conditions for temperature and light were maintained in the ranges of 7-24℃ and 0~100 μmol·m super(-2) s super(-1) on the environmental gradient table. The experiment for salinity was conducted in the range of 10~50‰ at 20℃ and 10 μmol·m super(-2) s super(-1). High values of the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) of dark adapted samples were obtained under 12-24℃, 0-10 μmol·m super(-2) s super(-1) and 20-40‰. This species seems to be adapted under wide ranges of temperature and salinity except irradiance. The estimated optimum growth condition coincides with the natural habitat, pycnocline or deep chlorophyll maximum layer in which P. provasolii usually appears.
