ABSTRACT
The brown alga Sphacelaria californica is investigated in detail with the type specimen and materials from Korea, Japan, North America and Australia. It is compared with the closely related S. navae-hollandiae. S. calfornica is characterized by determinate pinnate pinnate laterals with a tapering apex and by tribuliform propagules with conical lateral apical cells usually formed by oblique walls. Both macro-and microplurilocular zoidangia, formed on different plants, are described. S. novae-hollandiae is characterized by propagules with rectangular lateral apical cells formed by both longitudinal and transverse walls. A different morphology of propagules of S. californica plants from Australia requires further intensive study.
